My New Project – a MAME Arcade Cabinet
I finally made the first major purchase of a project I’ve been wanting to start for awhile now. I officially have three 4′x 8′ sheets of MDF in the garage now so I can start on my MAME arcade cabinet. So in a few months (hopefully sooner) we’ll have a full-size arcade cabinet living in our basement/game room/home theater (coming soon).
Even though it took some time for her to admit it, Jessie is pretty excited about it. She’s looking forward to playing Ms. Pac-Man on a real arcade machine and not a little joystick that plugs into the TV. She even has quite a preference when it comes to the joystick on the control panel. She has requested a ball-top joystick because that’s what the original Ms. Pac-Man machine had.
When I’m done, hopefully the machine will look a lot like the machine at this link.
I’m not sure what I’ll call it when I’m done. My goal is to not name if after any kind of accident that may happen during its construction. I don’t want any machine called Finger Eater or Blood Sucker. Besides, we already got rid of the dryer that could have been nicknamed Finger Slicer.
So move over Guitar Hero. Soon enough we’ll be able to play Ms. Pac-Man and Super Mario Brothers.

I notice the cabinet in the link has coin slots. Are you going to attempt to emulate the pocket-emptying behavior of the original arcade games?

Hehe. Actually I do plan on adding the coin slots though it would only be for the look rather than actually requiring any coins to play.
